German Shepherd jaw surgery site bleeding. What to do until vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 80 lbs

I have a 4 year old German Shepherd rescue who had surgery in April for an abscess in her jaw from an embedded piece of metal. She had stitches for awhile and once they were cut out I was told just to watch them and put bacitracin on the sites. One site every once in awhile breaks back open and bleeds a little but today is bleeding quite a bit. It's stopped at the moment but is there anything I should do until I can get in to the vet tomorrow?

I would apply pressure to it if it starts bleeding again, but if it starts bleeding excessively, Remy will need to see an ER vet right away. Keep her from rubbing it on things, and try to keep it clean and dry.
