My cat is gagging, wetting lips, and can't meow anymore. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male

My cat is normally quite feisty, so if you was to do something he doesn't like he would meow or go to scratch you. Lately he has been sick which was water/sticky substance, now he is no longer sick just keeps gagging and wetting his lips. Then this morning he has lost his meow and he no longer is aggressive he just tries to meow at you but nothing comes out. Please help as I am not sure what to do and don't want him to suffer. Thank you.

Poor Taz, it sounds like he is very unwell and is now becoming weak. I would be concerned about nausea and vomiting as well as a severe respiratory or throat infection. I recommend you get him assessed by a vet as soon as possible, blood tests may be recommended depending on the results of the initial exam

I would recommend that your cat get checked out by a vet. Coughing or gagging and a loss of meow can indicate damage to the vocal cords, nerve damage, tumors or polyps in the back of the throat, or sometimes internal medical issues. After a thorough physical exam, your vet may recommend bloodwork and sedation to look closely at the back of your kitty's throat for any abnormalities.
