Why is my dog throwing up, not eating, and sad after negative parvo?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 3 years and 10 months old

My dog is throwing up and won't keep food down. She just lays down sad and doesn't want to eat. She was tested for parvo and it was negative.

Poor Charlie! It's great that she doesn't have parvo, but if she can't keep food down and keeps throwing up, she could have a severe GI illness, pancreatitis, or a foreign body. I would take her back into the vet now. She will need a shot to stop the vomiting, and IV fluids for hydration. If the vet hasn't done x-rays to check for a foreign body, I think it would be a good idea for those to be done.

I'm sorry Charlie isn't feeling well at all! As with any test, false negatives are possible, and if he isn't fully vaccinated, parvo could be causing his vomiting. It could also be caused by a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. Given his recent history of vomiting, I would have him seen by a vet again today to have a retest of the parvo snap test, as well as a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis to diagnose what is causing his vomiting so he can be treated.

Hello. I am so glad that Charlie survived Parvo. That can be pretty scary. The vomiting is a bit of a concern, but it has nothing to do with his previous illness. Young labs are very much known for eating things they probably should not, so it is possible he found something in the backyard or got a hold of some trash. Since you indicate he is eating & feeling well, then I would not consider this an emergency situation, but if it continues after the holiday, please give your veterinarian a call to make sure all is OK. Take care.
