My dog had a black lump removed after grooming. Scar or cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | neutered | 8 years old | 22 lbs

My vet removed a lump that appeared after grooming. It was sort of hard above the abdonimal wall and he could not identify the cells clearly so the cells have gone to a pathologist. He said it could be a scar or cancer or anything in between. It hasn't gone anywhere in my dog. He said the cells appeared almost black. My dog has his normal energy and wants to play, walk and catch his toys. Have you ever heard of this?

There are many reasons lumps can develop and not all are cancerous; the fact he is normal in every other way is very positive and I would also recommend waiting for the pathologists report before trying to guess what might be going on - most reports are back with 10-14days. The dark color, although often a concern does not automatically mean there is anything sinister going on and can be related to a previous bleed, blood vessel swelling or a foreign body reaction amongst other things
