Dog nose sores healing, vet prescribed steroids, should I give them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Collie | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 66 lbs

My dog got sores on the bottom of his nostrils, they were 2mm x 4mm each..not visible unless looking right under his nose. It just looked a bit raw. I believed he got it irritated from licking into his Kong or a scratch from my kitten. The vet has said it's pemphigus and he needs 35mg of prednicare daily for first week. She gave me antibiotics also. I'm giving him the antibiotics and his sores are healing..I don't want to give him the steroids as I don't trust them or my vet

Steroids are a very important and useful class of medications but should be used with caution due to the risk of side effects. You should discuss your concerns with your vet, if the wound is healing you may just continue to monitor and reassess the condition if necessary. You could also consider seeking a second opinion from a different vet
