Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 4 months old

My dog has slight redness on his muzzle area near the nose, and the fur around there is brown. When I rub the area, brown bits fall off! Any help?

He could have a skin infection or an allergic dermatitis. You could bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps. If not, have your vet take a look at him. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, or a corticosteroid to help treat the problem.

It could be that your dog has bacterial or fungal skin infection causing this redness and irritation on his muzzle. I would have him seen by a vet on Monday. The vet can diagnose what is causing this redness and irritation, and can prescribe a treatment for it.

That could be a few things including bacterial infection, mites, ringworm (which humans can get), or allergies. Treatment at home may be difficult or even impossible if it is ringworm or mites. Additionally, treating things on the muzzle may be difficult as some pets are able to lick that area and remove any topical applied medications. If you want to try home care, then I recommend to wash the area daily with an antibacterial hand soap and rinse it well. Once it is dry you can apply a dab of coconut oil twice daily. Rub the oil in well and do not allow him to lick it. If the area is not looking significantly better in one week, I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian. There is value in having him seen earlier by his veterinarian as the doctor had preform some basic tests and know if mites or ringworm are present. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
