My small puppy cries in his crate. Is this normal and how to help?

I have a small puppy that weighs about a pound, when you leave him in his crate which is big he starts crying even if i am in the same room. Is it ok

Young puppies like this are often anxious about being left alone, even if they're just in a crate across the room. You can help him learn to enjoy being in his crate by giving him a special long-lasting treat each time you put him in - something like a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter works very well for many puppies. This will help to keep him busy and encourage him to settle, and will also teach him to associate good things with being in his crate.

Leave the crate open for him to go in and out during the day. At night, use a cover over the crate so he cant see you. Leave a nightlight on for him as well as a radio tuned to a talk station on low volume for "company". At his young age, he's going to want to be close to you. It will take time for him to acclimate to being in the crate.

It's okay, but ideally we want Baxter to enjoy being in his crate and not whine or cry at all - so next time, I would recommend giving him a special, long-lasting treat of some kind when you put him in his crate. A Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter is a great option for many puppies. This will help him get into the habit of settling down right away when he goes in, and will also teach him to associate good things with being in his crate. This should cut down quite a bit on the barking and whining, and help to set him up for a lifetime of enjoying his crate :)

It sounds like you are doing some of the general recommendations for crate training, like feeding in the crate and giving treats in the crate. I'm going to share with you all of my tips for crate training. But the two most important things are to ALWAYS give high value treats for going into the crate and never let him out if he's crying or barking.
For you I recommend doing this:
Step 1: Throw a handful of yummy treats in the crate and say "Crate" or whatever phrase you want to use and let him go in to eat them. While he's eating them, close the door and stand there. When he's finished eating the treats and not crying, open the door and let him out. Do this 5 times. This teaches him that he gets lots of treats in the crate. The crate is good!
Step 2: Throw the treats in the crate, say the word "Crate", let him go in and eat, close the door and walk out of site for a few seconds or a minute (very short

I would NOT recommend leaving him to just "cry it out," as this is not humane for a baby who is away from his mom and littermates for the first time in his life, and may predispose him to be anxious in the crate as an adult. Instead, put the crate in your bedroom, right beside your bed so he can hear you and smell you during the night. If he still panics, try using a doggie playpen (often called an "exercise pen") to contain him beside your bed, instead of the crate.

It can be hard for a 7-week-old puppy to be comfortable sleeping by himself in a crate, as normally puppies this age would still be sleeping all snuggled up with their mother and littermates. I'm not sure where Jasper's crate is in your home, but I always recommend putting it in the bedroom right beside your bed at first - you can move it later on if you want to, once he's a bit older and sleeping through the night without any problems. This way, he's much less likely to whine and cry because he knows you're right beside him. If he does fuss a bit, you can talk softly to him and rest your hand on top of the crate for him to sniff. For small puppies, if needed, you can even get a soft-sided pet carrier and have him sleep in this on the bed at first. You can gradually transition him to the floor once he's comfortable and no longer crying at night.

If my husband and I are in the room with our 9 week old puppy, Marley, and he is in the cage, why does he only cry when I am in the room? After time he calms, but only when I ignore his attempts for attention after about 15 minutes.
If you have previously given into him over your husband that may be why he only cries when you are in the room. If he is crying in the cage it is ok to leave him and then once he is quiet you can get him out. He is still young and is still learning. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Begin with crating her for very short periods of time. Gradually increase that time as she acclimates. This will take time and requires patience and consistency. Offer a special toy or treat as a distraction. Praise and reward her as she acclimates. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may help to decrease anxiety. This same method can be used to acclimate her to your absence. Additionally, you can prepare to leave several times daily then put everything away and stay or actually leave. Upon your return, ignore Lily Belle for 15 minutes or until she is calm. Do not make a big deal about coming or going. Consider a pet day care program or having a dog walker visit during the day. At her age, she should not be crated for more than 5 hours before being let out to relieve herself. This time can increase as she matures. The general rule is 1 hour of crate time per month of age plus an additional hour.

Poor Koko! The most common reason that puppies tend to cry at night, is when they are separated from their families - this often happens if they are crated in a different part of the house at night. Dogs are very social animals, and young puppies in particular would normally never be alone when they are sleeping - so they will often bark and cry if they are separated from you.
I would recommend having Koko sleep in a comfy dog crate, right beside your bed. If needed, you can even place the crate on a low table or chair so that she is at eye-level with you - this way, she is in her own separate space but she can hear you and smell you beside her. This is also a good arrangement because it allows you to hear her if she cries to go out during the night - many puppies this age can't "hold it" for more than a few hours at a time, so nighttime potty trips are often needed for a while.

A few suggestions.
*be sure to leave the crate open at all times, and let it be a happy place for him. put treats and toys in there, and you can even feed his meals in there. Encourage him to go in there just to relax with the door open. Don't ever use it for punishment.
* If the 2 dogs get along well, consider this-- I know it doesn't sound fair, because you've had your other dog for a long time, but if your other dog used to go in a crate, I would set one up for her as well. keep them side by side, leave them both open as described above, and when you leave the house or want to crate them at night, crate both dogs. (each in their own crate). Sometimes if a dog sees that his "buddy" is right next door and isn't freaking out, then this can provide some comfort and reassurance.
