Dog breast cancer: Clear fluid from tumor. Does it mean euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | unspayed | 13 years and 9 months old

My border collie has breast cancer that's mastesized to her lungs. Today we noticed drops of clear liquid coming from her, & when I laid her down, noticed an area on the tumor had a wet spot. Is this normal? And is this a sign we need to think about having her euthanized sooner than we thought?

No leakage of clear fluid from a mammary tumor does not indicate that you have to euthanize her. Sometimes tumors can ulcerate (open up) and leak fluids, but usually the fluid consists of blood or pus, so I am unsure why the fluid here is clear, unless there is another component to the mass that is cyst like. Apply pressure to the area to hopefully stop the leakage, and if needed have your vet take a look at the area to determine if anything else needs to be done to manage it.
