My dog has severe gum disease. Are there alternatives to tooth removal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 8 years and 8 months old | 19.84 lbs

Hi, I've been told my dog has gum disease and needs her bottom front teeth taken out, I believe she has Canine Periodontal Disease, I was wondering if there was a way of treating this without tooth removal? Thanks, Nathalie

If your vet told you that the teeth needs to be removed, it's probably pretty bad, in that case there is no effective alternative. Usually the vet will start with a scale and polish treatment, then he will remove the teeth that needs to be removed as he goes.
