Why does my dog chew the fence and bark? What can I do to stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Male

Our dog chews on the colorbond fence (aluminium). It chews on it until it is partly missing (as if filed away) and arced out, then it grabs with its teeth and pulls until the metal rips and the entire panel falls out of the frame and it can get through. Its a bulldog. It also barks like crazy at anyone on the other side of the fence (whom it cant see) and makes slobbery low growls while its chewing on the fence. Why does it do this and what can I do to stop it?

It sounds like Keg is chewing on the fence so that he can escape - many dogs do this as a result of boredom when they are left alone outside for long periods. Barking at people on the other side of the fence is also a very common behavior problem in dogs - it's very frustrating for him to be able to hear people walking past without being able to interact, so he barks and growls out of frustration. Over time, this behavior often gets worse and can evolve into aggression towards people outside the fence, so it's definitely cause for concern. All of these problems stem from Keg being outside on his own too much - dogs are very social animals, so they become quite frustrated and neurotic when they are outside alone all day. The only way to stop these behaviors is to stop leaving him alone outside - either bring him into the house, or go outside with him and keep him busy playing or hanging out near you.
