My puppy chews everything! How to stop biting & when does teething end?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 months and 7 days old | 13 lbs

My 9 week old puppy is teething really bad and constantly chewing on almost everything, especially rugs and clothes. My vet suggested for us to buy him a big rawhide to chew on, but are there any other methods to slow down the biting? When does the teething usually stop?

Yes you can purchase him teething toys from your local pet store. Typically these are toys that you place in the freezer that can help soothe the gums as the teeth erupts. Teething usually stops completely around 6 months of age.

Hello. Young puppies explore their world through their mouths & need to be taught what is acceptable to chew on. This will take some time & training. When she bites or growls ( which may be just some play acting ), just say no firmly & put something else in her mouth. A suitable soft toy would be nice, but she should have a range of toys with different shapes, sizes & textures, from soft to hard. Make sure anything she plays with is large enough not to be easily swallowed, & has no pieces that can come off to be swallowed. Her adult teeth will start to erupt at around 4-6 months of age, so chewing will be a part of both your lives for a while. Use gentle discipline, & have lots of patience, treats & toys & everyone will get through this. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
