My dog is underweight and won't gain weight. What vet tests are needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 4 lbs

My dog is skinny and doesn't keep on weight at all. No matter how much I feed her, she somehow doesn't get fat. She is the runt of the litter and has been skinny her whole life. I was wondering what test would be done to find out what's wrong with her. A fecal, blood smear, or others.

The first tests that will need to be done is a full blood work, urine analysis and faecal test. These test should provide a lot of information or will at least rule out most possibilities. If nothing comes out of these tests the next step will be an ultrasound.
