My cat has a nipple infection. Can I treat it at home or is it contagious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 8 lbs

My cat had developed an infection on her nipple and the discharge smells very bad. She is an unspayed, 10yrs old. So I know that there's a possibility that she has breast caner and needs care immediately. She eats very well and still very active for now. Is there anything I can do as far as treatment with medication at home? Also, is the puss contagious to the cats? I have 3 boys and they're all indoor only. Thank you.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do for Mami at home, she has to see a vet immediately. It sounds like she has mastitis, which is an infection of the mammary glands. Mastitis is life threatening and does require immediate medical attention. To treat it requires antibiotics, which can only be prescribed by your vet. The pus is not contagious, so you don't have to worry about your boys. Please take her into a vet now.
