Why is my dog coughing like a duck and can't bark? What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | 9 years and 3 months old | 17 lbs

My dog is about 17 pounds and age 9. He started coughing during the night last night and hasn't stopped. It almost sounds like a duck sound but it seems like his throats might be inflamed. He wasn't able to bark very well earlier either. What could this be?

If he was kenneled or groomed recently or has been around other dogs, it may be kennel cough. His breed is also predisposed to developing heart disease or a collapsing trachea. Shadow should be examined by your vet if the cough is worsening or if he is developing other symptoms such as lethargy, exercise intolerance or difficulty breathing. Chest xrays can be done to diagnose respiratory or cardiac disease.
