My Shih Tzu has watery, red eyes. Why isn't Benadryl helping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 8 years and 3 months old | 22 lbs

Our shin ztu is having watery eyes with some redness at times. It started in the left eye and is now starting in the right eye also. We thought it might be allergies and have been giving her benedryl, but this doesn't seem to be helping much. What do you think the problem might be?

It sounds like Tessa has an eye infection. I would take her into the vet today to have her eye examined. It's important to have any eye infections examined and treated promptly, as leaving them untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can confirm that she does have an eye infection, and can prescribe an antibiotic eye ointment to treat it.
