My dog's legs jerk when relaxing. Could it be restless leg syndrome?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Female | spayed | 24 lbs

My 4 year old Rat Terrier rescue dog has what appears to be restless leg syndrome. She was abused and very timid and scared when I got her last January. She is doing much better now but still looks wary when she is touched on her butt. They are pretty strong jerks when she is relaxing. Could this be restless leg syndrome?

There are some documented cases of pets doing these involuntary muscle jerks during rest which has been characterized as being similar to "Restless leg syndrome" in people. This condition is still being studied in dogs, and the current treatment for this is Pregabalin or Diazepam prescribed by your veterinarian.
