My husky's dew claw is pink and he keeps licking it. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 52.9 lbs

Hello I've recently noticed that my husky boy's who's 2. 5yo left dew claw has pink colouring around it. Feels exactly the same as the right one when I touch it and he doesn't seem to be in pain when I feel it, however he licks it quite often, sometimes even nibbles. The nail itself seems in shape and not sure if he hurt himself or where that pinkness came from. Any suggestions please? I'm very worried. Many thanks

Poor Nikolai! It sounds like that dew claw is definitely bothering him for some reason. Redness around the nail bed normally indicates inflammation - he may have gotten it caught on something, which can cause soreness and sometimes a bit of redness or swelling. He could also have a nail bed infection of some kind. Since he seems to be acting fine otherwise, you can try soaking the affected paw in warm water and Epsom salts every day for the next few days to help with the soreness and inflammation. If the problem is minor, it should resolve on its own. If there is no improvement in the next 5-7 days, or if things seem to be getting worse, then I would recommend having him examined by a vet - he may need oral antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication to treat the problem.

The redness and swelling seen in this photo would make me suspicious we could have an infection going on here. I would recommend a visit to your vet for confirmation and to get the appropriate prescription to treat infection if they determine that it is present.
