Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 14 year old female house cat has a thinning patch on her side which did have scabs but have fallen off. I have no clue what caused this and confused as it's just on one area. What can cause this. Thanks for any help

Poor kitty! Many skin conditions can cause hair loss and scabs like this, even though only one area of her body is affected. She may have allergies (food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), fleas, or a bacterial or fungal skin infection. In an older cat like this, systemic illnesses like hyperthyroidism can also cause hair loss and scabs. I would recommend taking your cat to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do some simple skin testing and blood work if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.
