Why is my dog so lethargic after taking Clavamox for bronchitis?

Does Clavamox make a dog sleepy? My boy is on it for bronchitis. He's done nothing, but drag all day.

Yes, lethargy can be a side effect of Clavamox, and it could also be a side effect of Higdon from feeling so ill from bronchitis. He should start feeling better in a couple of days from the antibiotic, so if he is still lethargic in another 72 hours, I would take him back into the vet for an exam.

This isn’t a normal side effect of Clavamox, but it may be the illness the antibiotic was prescribed for that is causing the lethargy. Keep an eye on him for now, and if he is still lethargic in the morning, give his vet a call.

Her eating grass and feeling unwell could very well be the clavamox, it is known to cause nausea. try giving the clavamox about 10-15 minutes after a large meal. it can reduce this side effect. the sleepiness could be both the antibiotics and the kennel cough, it's quite normal but she should start feeling better soon.

Hi, The dose of amoxicilin/clavulanic acid is 12.5mg/kg -25mg/kg so, your dog was prescribed the right dose. It would be very unlikely that Guiness was subdued because of this antibiotic, as lethargy is an uncommon side effect of this medication. However, in rare cases this type of adverse reactions are possible and if you notice that your dog is lethargic after the next dose of antibiotic you should get in touch with your veterinarian to possibly change the type of medication he is on.

I hate to hear that Scout has an anal gland infection. I would recommend to call his veterinarian and discuss the lethargy. The lethargy could be a reaction but could also be due to the abscess. I would not advise to stop the medication without talking to Scout's doctor. Make sure you are giving the medication with food. I hope he starts feeling better!

Adult neutered male cat is lethargic & walks strange, a bit clumsily w/back arched. Hid for a day, but is still eating normal. Took to vet & diagnosed with 'surely some type of infection' & given Clavamox which he completed days ago.
If the clavamox didn't resolve the issue, I would bring him back in for additional exams such as neurologic examination, bloodwork, x-rays, etc to try and narrow down the cause. These can help rule out metabolic or infectious issues, injuries or joint problems, or neurological disease that could be causing his symptoms. If you weren't comfortable with your current vet, seeking out a second opinion in person or getting a referral to a specialist in your area may also be beneficial.

Are dogs on clavamox for a cold still contagious?
With any upper respiratory infection, it's safest to assume that your dog may still be contagious up to a week after symptoms have resolved. So even if your pup is on Clavamox, this rule still applies :)

It could be a side effect of convenia but it is more likely to be the ongoing tooth infection, i personally do not like convenia as a treatment for teeth infections i believe there are much better options such as Clindamycin and Amoxyclav that work much better in mild cases (in severe cases the tooth needs to be removed).

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Macrolone contains a steroid but is not expected to result in side effects like the ones you describe. The only instance where that medication could result in such side effects is if for example it is causing like gastrointestinal ulceration and anemia. In that case you may notice black tarry stools and his gums may look pale. If that is the case, I recommend that you have him evaluated as soon as possible as that may represent a medical emergency. Otherwise, severe lethargy can be observed with a variety of conditions going from anemia to pain/discomfort. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon as that degree of lethargy is not expected from that medication and is likely something else going on. Good luck!

Hello and thank you for your post! Speaking from personal experience, this used to happen to my dog as well. I would give him his capsule and sometimes it would get stuck under his lip and it would partially dissolve releasing the powder in his mouth. He would shake his head and foam at the mouth because of how bitter the powder was. He never got sick because of this and the powder generally will not cause any irritation it is just very bitter and distasteful. I would think that the antibiotic itself would be causing him to feel sick if he managed to swallow some of the antibiotic on an empty stomach. It is also possible that it has nothing to do with the medication that was administered and is completely something else that has led to him feeling sick. Since you have an appointment with your veterinarian, I would wait and see what the physical examination shows and possibly have Joel's blood tested. I hope this helps! Itchy, crusty skin infection treated with Clavamox, followed by hard, crusty enlargement of one front leg. Dog is now completely lethargic but still eating. What is it and how do we treat it?
I am sorry Emily is not feeling well. It sounds like you have already taken her to the vet and started clavamox. However if it is getting worse I would recommend taking her back for more testing. I think Emily needs blood work and a possible skin scrape. Older dogs can get skin mites, parasites and underlying disease that can make the skin looked infection. I have seen a few cases of liver disease that extremely affects the skin on the legs. You can try to give her a bath in medicated shampoo however more diagnostic testing is really the next step.
