Why does my male dog's penis bleed around a female in heat?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 60 lbs
I have a male dog that keeps bleeding from his penis but only when a female dog is in heat. What does that mean?

It could be either from the act of mounting the female (physical injury) or from a prostate disease that is causing the bleeding. I believe it would be best to have Optimus neutered to prevent this from happening.

These blood spots from Obey's penis could be from mating with the female dog in heat. The blood could also be hers from her heat, or he could have done a little bit of damage to his penis from vigorous mating. I would keep an eye on Obey for now, and if this bleeding increases, he appears painful, or the irritation gets worse, I would have him seen by a vet.

Blood dripping from the penis of an intact male dog is most often caused by an enlarged prostate - your vet can do a rectal exam as well as x-rays or ultrasound of the prostate to confirm this. If this is the case, neutering normally resolves the problem.

Ow! King is not neutered, so if he has been breeding other dogs this could be caused by trauma to the penis. Another concern would be bladders stones or urinary tract infection. If he can't seem to urinate normally, this is an emergency. If the bleeding continues and is not an isolated event, I recommend scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam, urinalysis, and bladder xray/ultrasound.

There could be a couple of things going on with Mickey. Neutered dogs can still try to mate, so if you have a female in heat in the house, he may have had sex with her and got blood on his penis from that. It could also be caused by a bladder issues, such as a UTI or bladder stones. If the blood is the only sign, and he is showing no other symptoms (such as frequent urination in small amounts), then I would be more inclined to think the blood is from trying to have sex with your female. I would monitor him for now, and if he does show any other signs, such as frequent urination in small amounts, I would take him into the vet for an exam. You can also keep him separate from the female until she is out of heat, and if no more blood appears on his penis during that time, then it is likely due to him having sex with her.
