My vet today recommended pineapple juice as a way to prevent hairballs in my rabbits. Is this true and if so how much and how often?

The feeding of pineapple juice is controversial and some believe it is not useful. It will not harm her so if you want to add it to her diet you can. Rabbits get hairballs because of a decreased motility (movement) of the gastrointestinal tract which leads to the dehydration and impaction of the material in the stomach. Feeding the proper diet will decrease the chance of getting a motility disorder so the best prevention is a healthy diet. A healthy diet for a rabbits includes large amounts digestible and indigestible fiber, low carbohydrates, and adequate water. Make sure to feed grass hay and green leafy foods. If you want to give her some pineapple juice, you can, just make sure it is fresh juice and use in small amounts.
