What causes sudden weakness and behavior changes in my old cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 years and 10 months old | 16 lbs

My cat suddenly changed. Two weeks ago (considering his age (17)) he was active, social and had a good appetite. All of a sudden out of nowhere he moves slowly, has trouble walking (like he's weak), eats a lot less, doesn't meow, his tale is always slumped down, never grooms himself anymore, and doesn't seem to like being pet. I'm pretty worried and hoping something can be done.

I can imagine that you are worried, given such a sudden change; however don't lose hope. Make a vet appointment for Rusty ASAP. Bloodwork may very well reveal the problem - older cats can often get kidney disease, and the decline is often so slow we don't readily notice it. Other possibilities include pain from arthritis, anemia, heart disease, or even a hormonal disease like diabetes. All of the above can be treated in some way, but diagnosis is the first step.
