Why does my dog bite my mom when she falls? Is it fear or aggression?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Old English Sheepdog | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 1 month old | 80 lbs

My parents' 5-year-old full-blooded Old English Sheepdog has shown aggressive behavior -- but only to my mother, who falls frequently. The dog has bitten Mom twice in the head when Mom falls near her (not on her). I'm sure the falls startle the dog (not her fault!) but I am concerned about the safety of my mother. The dog is the perfect pet for my Dad, but he is considering getting rid of her. Would you keep the dog? What should I be looking for to explain this behavior?

This is a very tough situation for you and your family to have to deal with at the moment! It is serious that Hoochie is biting your mother when she falls near her, and while the fall can startle her, it's not normal for a dog to respond with aggression. Hoochie is showing fear aggression, and it is something that has be dealt with immediately. I recommend speaking to your vet about a consult with a professional behavioral expert. Dealing with aggression can be tricky and dangerous, and it's best done with an expert. I would set up an appointment with a behavioral expert as soon as possible.
