My rabbit has fur loss, flaky skin, and irritation. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male

My rabbit has a patch of fur missing on his back, it's visibly irritated and there's flaky skin all over the remaining tufts. I've applied tea tree veterinary provided cream to the area but he keeps licking at it and i'm worried he's going to get more ill. My mother noticed the flaky skin on his back and combed out an insect, I don't have the money or facilities to travel to a vet and really need some answers.

Your rabbit likely has a mite infection. Stop the tea tree oil (it causes more problems) and you need to get him to a vet for an injection against mites. If you cannot go to a veterinarian , try to contact your local rabbit society, They may be able to help you.
