Blood and mucous in the stool is typically a sign of hemorrhagic enteritis which is not life threatening in most cases if it is treated appropriately. This condition can be caused by stress or a sudden change in diet. You can give probiotics (Culturelle over the counter works, or pet formulated Fortiflora) to help with this condition. Antibiotics (i..e Metronidazole) are also needed in some cases to clear things up, especially if there is no resolve within 24-48 hrs. I would also recommend feeding Luther a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days, then slowly transition to his regular dog food over the course of a week. Hemorrhagic enteritis almost always responds well to these three treatments.

Blood and mucous in the stool can be caused by some serious illness, such as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, a foreign body, parvovirus, and rectal injuries. Other causes include parasites and dietary indiscretion. I would recommend taking Luther into the vet today for an exam, along with a sample of his feces. The vet can examine the feces, do a physical exam, routine blood tests, and a urinalysis to diagnose what is causing him to have blood and mucous in his stools, and can treat accordingly.
