My senior dog has arthritis on Onsior. Can she get more pain relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 14 years old | 57 lbs

My 14 year old Golden Retriever is on 40mg Onsior for spondylosis and arthritis in her knees. She's getting some bad days where she can't put weight on one leg and is very hobbly. Would extra pain relief be of benefit?

Yes, I think Honey would benefit from some extra pain relief. I would speak to her vet about having a prescription for another pain reliever for her, such as an opioid which can be used safely in combination with NDSAIDs (Onsior is an NDSAID).

Possibly, yes. In addition to the onsior a medication called Tramadol can be added. Omega 3 supplements can also help the arthritis in some cases. Finally, if non of the above helps, the Onsior can be replaced by a slightly different medication such as Previcox.
