My dog got a bite wound. Can I give him another dog's antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 50 lbs

My dog was bit on his lower jaw by a neighbors dog. He has a laceration that is not big, but it was bleeding. he is now compulsively licking everything. We have some antibiotics on hand as our other dog just had TPLO. Can we give him some?

No, it's not safe to give Rex your other dog's medication, as it may not be the correct antibiotic for the bacteria in the dog's mouth that bit him. If the laceration isn't big or deep and the bleeding has stopped, you can wait to take him into the vet until the morning. The vet can examined the laceration, and give an appropriate antibiotic. If the laceration is deep, or the bleeding isn't stopping, you will need to take Rex into the vet now.
