My dog pooped blood after fleas. Is it a parasite? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 40 lbs

Hi, my beagle/Brit. Spaniel mix just had a poop in the house for the second time today. It wasn't hard, also not watery. There were a few drops of blood (red/pink on a paper towel). I'm very concerned. He just got over fleas I am worried he may have contracted a parasite

Poor Remi! You are correct the blood in his feces could be due to intestinal parasites, but it could also be due a foreign body, trauma to the GI tract, or ruptured anal sacs. If he isn't up to date on his deworming treatments, I would take him into the vet for an exam. Bring along as sample of his feces for the vet to examine. The vet can determine if he does have intestinal parasites, or if there is another cause to this blood, and then treat accordingly. I would take him in the morning, it's not an emergency to rush him to a vet tonight.
