My Irish Setter barks and pulls at certain dogs. How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Irish Setter | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 50 lbs

I have a 3 yr old rescue Irish Setter. She likes most dogs apart from long haired medium sized dogs, eg alsations, huskies and also some greyhounds/whippets. Off lead she charges off to them and runs around them barking. On lead she pulls so hard and barks until I can get her away. Hope for help as walking her is becoming a chore and not a pleasure.

Try walking her with a Gentle Leader as you will have more control over her. You will need to do some training with her to distract her from the other dogs. You could teach her the "leave it" or "watch me" command. With patience and persistence, you, should be able to teach her to ignore the other dogs.
