My older cat's fur is rusty and he's irritable. Vet visit needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 years and 3 months old | 21 lbs

I noticed lately that parts of my cats fur has turned a bit rusty. I looked it up and its probably nothing to worry about but I saw something that said it could be due to liver/kidney/thyroid problems. Since hes a bit of an older cat (12 years old) I'm a bit worried since hes also gotten a bit irritable lately (although that may be due to us getting a puppy recently). It could be nothing but I don't know whether to take him to a vet just in case.

I think you are correct with your suspicion, kidney or thyroid disease are a possibility and a simple blood test (including T4 for thyroid) will be able to detect those diseases and hopefully it will come back negative so you can have peace of mind.
