Is it less stressful to travel with my cat or use a pet sitter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

I have a very social and curious 2 year-old indoor cat adopted from a shelter a year ago. My husband I need need to go out of town for 15 days this winter. Which solution is better: taking the cat on the plane with us (in the cabin, 6h flight) or asking the neighbors to drop by and take care of him one or twice a day? Our cat had a very bad rhinotracheitis when we adopted him and required hospitalization. I fear that the stress from the plane could trigger it again. What do you suggest?

You're a super thoughtful owner for considering Liam's health. In my opinion, and as owner of 2 cats, I can tell you that mine (and most that I know) prefer to be at home, and pretty much despise travel. If you don't have to take him, leave him at home, and have the neighbors feed him and interact with him, so that he's comfortable and happy at home.
