Why is my cat scratching, chewing feet, and has a swollen muzzle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Wirehair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 7 months old | 19 lbs

My cat is acting weird. He keeps scratching himself and chewing as his feet. His muzzle mouth area looks swollen and looks purplish pink. He doesn't want to be touched and was running around and running from me. The other day he set off a mouse trap but I don't know if it got him, he was fine until yesterday. He's not himself at all and I'm so worried, please advise I can't afford a vet

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you flea Garfield regularly every month with a high quality flea product (ex. Advantage Multi) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy. In some cases a course of antibiotics is also needed in order to treat the secondary infection that has appeared.
