My puppy is limping with a swollen, painful front elbow. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 13 days old | 6 lbs

My little puppy woke up Thursday morning limping. I found the source of the problem and it seems to be on his front left elbow. My guess is a big bite of some sort. He can't stretch his leg straight, cause he cries. His elbow feels swollen compared to his right elbow. He cries if he stretches his leg up and down only. Nothing seems broken or dangling. I've applied ice and it seems to relieve some of his pain for a short while. Please help!!

Shadow must see a vet for this issue. The swelling could mean a fracture or dislocation in the elbow. You cannot tell if something is fracture or not many times just be looking at the leg or feeling it. An x-ray needs to be done. A bite would not cause that much pain and swelling. There are also congenital abnormalities (like ununited aconeal process) that could be going on in that elbow. Please take Shadow to the vet. This cannot be treated at home. There is no over the counter medications you can give to a 2 month old puppy. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
