Incomplete dog blood test results: Is this normal vet practice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alaskan Malamute | Female | spayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 107 lbs

I took my 4 year old Alaskan Malamute to our vet last week to have a complete blood test done, I thought she may have a zinc deficiency as she is showing symptoms of this. speaking to vet I decided to have a complete blood test done to rule out anything else,2 lots of blood taken and told it'll be a week for all tests to come back, called today to be told her zinc levels are fine and if I want more tests results she's to go back to get more blood taken, seems strange, is this a normal procedure?

This does seem odd. If you were told that she would have a complete blood panel and two vials of blood were taken, then there should be some missing results. The person who called may have been mistaken... I would call back and ask to speak with the veterinarian. The person who calls is sometimes not the vet and may not fully understand the case. Also, it should always be the doctor that interprets blood results. Sometimes the lab either forgets to send the results, or somehow doesn't run the tests. I would look at your receipt and see what you had been charged for. If you were charged for a CBC and Biochemistry (which is often the meaning of a complete blood panel), then they owe this to you and need to remedy the situation by either calling the lab and finding the results, or drawing blood again (at no fee). I hope that helps and everything turns-out OK with Laska.
