My rabbit has terminal jaw abscesses. How can I keep him comfortable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | neutered | 7 years and 9 months old

We've been treating jaw abscesses for 2yrs through surgery and injectable antibiotics. However it has spread to his bone and the vet has said its terminal so stopped. As he is still eating and drinking as normal, they suggest we let him live out his days at home. Hes now drooling and making his paws and face sore. I use sudocrem but is there anything else I can do to make him feel more comfortable whilst I still can?

I'm really sorry to hear about poor Patches. These abscesses can be very nasty and I've seen similar cases - very heartbreaking. When the infection is that deep, there is little that can be done to alleviate the pain besides pain killers. The best ones are injectable, but buprenorphine can be given by mouth and be effective. I would ask your vet if it's possible for this or some other strong pain killer to be prescribed. I hope that helps and you can keep Patches comfortable.
