Senior dog's neck lump is growing, bleeding, and smells. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | 13 years and 6 months old

Hello, Dustin my 13.7 years old lab, has a weird swelling in his neck, it has been there for years, was very small looking like a blister and my vet told me it was nothing serious but it got bigger in the last months and bleeds a little... It often has a bad smell cause of the blood I guess so I clean it using mild soap and water. I'm a bit worried, he's taking natural meds for inner nasal tumor, suffers from vestibular syndrome and reverse sneezing Thanks

It does look more cyst-like, but we never can tell for sure just by looking. If it's swelling and bleeding, then I think it's time to take it off. This type of tumor can likely be removed with light sedation and local anesthesia (numbing the area where it will be cut) - this would be favorable considering Dustin's other health problems. After removing it, the vet can inspect it and send to the lab if necessary in order to find out exactly what this is. It may help with identifying the nasal tumor if this hasn't been done. I hope that helps and Dustin gets better soon.
