Why is my kitten's skin dry and flaky after using dish soap for fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 lbs

I've been bathing my 6 week old kitten with dawn dish washing liquid for a few days for fleas. On this last bath, I noticed her skin was quite flaky, as I was able to lift it with a small comb. This is the first time I've seen anything like this after bathing her.

Dish soap is not recommended for delicate kitten skin and I recommend you start her on a course of omega fatty acid supplements as soon as possible (such as viacutan) to try to replenish the natural oils and moisture in her skin. I recommend using a fipronil based flea spray 48hours after the last wash to help reduce the fleas and also spray all bedding and sleeping areas with an insecticidal flea spray alongside daily, gentle flea combing
