My dog's cyst is red and sensitive. When should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 64 lbs

Dog had what appeared to be a sebaceous cyst when I got him at 13 weeks. It showed no change until yesterday. Now it has flattened and turned red and is sensitive to touch. Dog seems fine otherwise. Clear eyes, normal activity, normal appetite. How soon should I take him to the vet? Is this urgent?

I am a little confused by the information provided. You noticed the cyst at 13 weeks of age but now he is 2 and having a problem? This is what I understand from the above information. Cyst are not very common in young dogs but can happen. IF a cyst was present they can pop and become infected. This will cause redness and sometimes pain. I would recommend taking titus to the vet to have the lesion examined more closely and proper medications dispensed to help resolve the issue. I hope that helps. Thanks for using pet coach and I hope Titus feels better soon
