Is prednisone causing my dog's dry skin and hair loss on ears?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Welsh Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 22 lbs

My dog is currently being treated for an ear infection. He originally had BNT in his ears which was flushed out after he had a reaction to it (red, irritation in ears) . He is now on his second wound of orbax and prednisone and his skin recently started drying up and hair falling out on his ears. Could this be a reaction to the meds?

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry Charlie is having a ear problem-ouch! Prednisone can cause thinning of the skin as well as dry skin over time. This tends to occur when a patient is on this steroid for a long period of time. If Charlie has been on Pred for only a short time, it is unlikely the dry skin is due to the steroid. If Charlie has been or had been itching at his ears, this could cause local inflammation on the outside of the ear and that can cause the hair around the area the fall out and the skin to become scaly and crusty as it continues to heas. If it doesn't heal up with the hair growing back in the next 2 weeks, I would revisit with your veterinarian again. Best wishes to you and Charlie!
