My 6-week puppy has separation anxiety. How often should I feed him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 7 days old | 1lb

I have a 6 week old pitbull puppy that I have only had a week and he was separated from his mother at 4 weeks and neglected until the following week when I got him. He was pitiful but now he is a happy puppy for thr most part, but he is extremely attached to me and has separation anxiety very bad. I'm sure that is normal, right? Or should I be doing something to make him more comfortable being away from me? Also, do I feed him 4x/day or more?

Great questions and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend using a crate for Dozer if you aren't already. This will give him a place to sleep and stay while you aren't around. I would put something that smells like you (like a shirt) in the crate with him and play soft music in the backround. When he falls asleep, put him in the crate so he wakes up in there. You can leave toys with him so he has something to do. I would also work on training, like sit and wait, to build his confidence. If not already, he should be eating canned puppy food and add dry food. I recommend 3-4 meals per day. He no longer needs milk replacer and you shouldn't need to feed him more than 4x per day. Good luck to you and your new puppy!
