My dog was on Baytril. Should he switch to Doxycycline for RMSF?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 61 lbs

Do Baytril and Doxycycline treat the same thing? Our dog had a UTI and was on Baytril for 8 weeks. Now they think he has rocky mountain spotted fever. Does he need a different regimen for this?

Baytril and Doxycycline are two different classes of antibiotics which work differently. Doxycycline is a commonly used antibiotic for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Baytril can be used to treat Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, but is not as commonly used. Here is more information onf Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=3574 Here is more information on Doxycycline https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=642 And finally, here is more information on Baytril. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=553 If your vet is recommending treating Slater with Doxycycline, I would follow their recommendation for the treatment regimen. I hope that helps. Thanks for using PetCoach.
