Why does my rabbit have a recurring chin abscess and skin problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 2 months old | 2.7 lbs

I have a 10 year old rabbit who has a big abscess under his chin. We go to the vet once a week to have it drained and he is also prescribed antibiotics and a needle (also antibiotics). His abscess was drained 3 days ago and yesterday it has already grown back to full size. His ears are have flaky skin, the two sides above his thighs and behind his neck are also bald. Yesterday he lied on his side (almost upside down) and it looked like he was trying to scratch his ear. The position was reallyodd

I am sorry Takun is not feeling well. Most of the time these type of abscess are due to infected teeth. Most of the time this will not resolve unless the abnormal teeth are removed or the cause of the abscess is removed. I would recommend taking Takun to a vet who works on rabbit teeth for another exam and possible anesthesia with x-rays and tooth removal if needed. Hope that helps
