Why is my dog scratching her mouth until it's swollen and bleeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 20 lbs

Hello, my 2-year-old dog has been scratching the left side of her mouth the last few days, to the point where it is swollen and bleeding. It is only the left side. I cannot see any lesions or signs of tooth problems inside the mouth. Any suggestions?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. With the symptoms you are describing, I would suspect allergies or some type of infection. If you have not already, I would get Harper seen by your vet as an infection would require oral antibiotics. Sometimes skin parasites can also affect this area. Your vet can perform the necessary Diagnostics to determine what the primary cause is and to put Harper on the most appropriate treatment. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed.
