Why is my adopted cat sleeping a lot with eye discharge and sneezing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 50 lbs

Hello, I just adopted my cat.. she has this discharge coming from her eyes, it’s brownish. She’s been sleeping ALOT, she won’t really open her eyes or be active. She does eat/drink and use the litter box normally.. but other than that sleeps. She also sneezes here and there.

It looks like Sky is recovering from an upper respiratory infection. That can cause tears, a runny nose, sneezing and lethargy. Give her a few weeks to get better and settle in to the household. If she doesn't improve then I'd take her in for an exam to make sure there is not a problem with her eyes or an infection that is causing her to sleep so much. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Sky.
