Why does my dog only mount other dogs when they visit our home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 16 days old

My dog is very excited around dogs when on walks and wants to play but when my brother brings his dog to our house he tries to mount that dog. He doesn't do this anywhere else to any other dog. Is it because the dog is in his 'territory' or would he do it regardless?

It is likely your dog is doing this behavior to your brother's dog because they are around each other long enough for your dog to have the opportunity and maybe he feels comfortable with your brother's dog if they are around eachother frequently and is not fearful of your brother's dog's reaction or he really enjoys seeing your brother's dog which makes him extra excited. You can try to distract him with a game or toy before the behavior occurs to discourage it if this bothers you. Having him neutered may also decrease this behavior. Mounting other dogs is a sign of dominance, so Ziggy is trying to be the boss of the other dog. He may do that regardless but usually the behavior happens more often in the home setting like you are seeing. I generally try to discourage this behavior by taking them out in the yard or for a walk. As long as the other dog is submissive and they are playing I'm not overly concerned. If they seem like they are getting aggressive just separate them or distract them with another activity. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Ziggy.
