My dog has red bumps and a rash on her back. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 7 lbs

My dog has two bumps on her back and when I very easily pulled them out each has a rash under it and is red. What do I do? What is this? Is it a disease? Should I take her to the vet? Is there any ointment?

I am sorry to hear about Cassie. It looks like this could be a reaction to an insect bite or a small spot of infection we can sometimes see as a result of allergies. I would recommend cleaning the area with a mild soap and applying a topical antibiotic such as neosporin on the area 2-3 time a day. If the lesions are not improving in a few days, new lesions are developing, or the area is looking worse then I would recommend an examination by your veterinarian.

It may be a skin infection from an allergy or a scratch or bite there. The best thing to do is clean the area with soap and water and apply neosporin to keep it clean. If it bothers her and she scratches to make it worse or does not seem to dry up with in the next day or two then I would get it checked to see if oral antibiotics are needed

It sounds like Daisy could have a skin infection and/or allergies. You could bathe her with a medicated shampoo and see if that helps. If the bumps persist she will need to be examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to help treat.
