Why does my rescue dachshund bite my husband when it gets dark?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old | 15 lbs

We have rescued a dachshund and have very little information on his history other than he bit someone. His personally changes when it gets dark. He growls and tries to bite ... so far this aggression has only been at the husband ( he actually has bitten him right after we got him in July of this year). Have you ever heard of behavior like this? I don't want to give up on him; I am going to start tomorrow and check with our local humane society as well as Four Footed Friends. Do you agree?

Depending on his previous living situation, he may have been exposed to a number of factors that are triggered by Darkness or men. When you adopt a rescue it is always difficult to determine what they previously were exposed to and what triggers to avoid. You might find in three to five years a new trigger that sets him off. With rescued animals, it normally takes a period of acclimatization to the new environment. You can seek behavioral training with a behaviorist and see if that helps with the behavior you are witnessing. Dachshunds have been known to be one of the more common breeds that bite. If he is causing physical harm to you and your husband, he may not be the best pet for anyone. Unless you can invest the time and be patient with him and potentially seek behavioral training, it may be a long road to get him used to his new environment.
