Why is my dog shaking, depressed, not eating after vet procedures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

This afternoon I took my dog buddy to the vet, he got his rabies shot, DAP shot, and anal glands expressed. But now 4 hours later at home, he is shaking and he is very depressed, won't eat,nor drink water. Is this a sign of dehydration?

I am sorry to hear about Buddy. He could possibly be painful or uncomfortable from the vaccination or the anal gland expression. If you know where the vaccines were given you can try placing an ice pack (wrapped in a thin cloth) over the areas of vaccination for 10 minutes every hour or so. If Buddy has vomiting, repeated diarrhea, trouble breathing, swelling of the face, or hives (raised welts on the body), or fever (rectal temperature over 102.5- you can take a rectal temperature by lubricating a thermometer with vaseline or ky jelly and inserting an inch or two into the rectum) or if he becomes more depressed/non responsive then these could be signs of allergic reaction to vaccination and he should be taken to the emergency vet. If he is still not back to his normal self tomorrow I would recommend calling his usual vet to see if he needs an examination or some pain medication.
