What to do when my senior dog has early morning indoor accidents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Whippet | Male | unneutered

My male elderly whippet keeps waking up (and thus me) to go for a pee in the early hours, unfortunately we doesn't usually make it to the garden in time so he ends up doing it on the floor before we get there. Is there anything that you think I can do to stop this?

He could have a urinary tract infection or a medical condition that makes him urinate more. The best thing would be to have your vet run a urinalysis and blood-work to rule out medical causes. If the lab-work is normal then you should make sure you take him out as late as possible before bed time and you could also limit the amount of water he drinks late at night.

If this is a new issue for Dash, I would bring him to your vet for a senior wellness exam. Sometimes, older pets can have trouble getting outside to go potty, or may have issues with being able to hold their potty. Ruling out or treating problems such as arthritis, early dementia, nerve pain, and other health issues may help reduce the accidents in the house. Until you can get to your vet, returning to a more "puppy" style of potty training by taking him out more often, 15 minutes after eating, drinking, waking, playing, etc may help reduce accidents and allow him enough chances to go outside.
