German Shepherd Dogs are predisposed to a disease called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) which causes chronic diarrhea and weight loss due to maldigestion. This disease is fairly simple to diagnose and treat. Here is a link with more information on this disease: https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1627

Great question! You will not always see worms in the stool. Usually we only see microscopic eggs. I recommend taking ZigZag to the vet with a fresh stool sample so they can look for those eggs. Not all over the counter dewormers treat all intestinal parasites so you really need to find out what one(S) she has so she can get the proper treatment. Good luck and kisses to ZigZag!

Weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea are very vague signs and common to many conditions - parasitic, bacterial and viral gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, liver and kidney disease can all cause the symptoms you describe. I strongly recommend a full blood panel in order to investigate internal causes as the weight loss is progressive and would suggest that there may be additional complicating factors present. Semi-solid and liquid foods such as freshly boiled chicken and rice can be easier to digest than dry or solid foods and may help the bowel to readjust, I would also consider adding a probiotic such as fortiflora in the meantime as this may help with bowel recovery following the bloodied diarrhea
